Voyage Controller Software
Case Histories
Northwest Signal Supply, Inc. has unique feature sets in our software that are available to our customers. We pride ourselves on allowing our customers to have extreme flexibility for unique situations out in the traffic field.
Here are some examples where our customers are using notable features for those unique situations:
City of Portland – Use of the Light Rail Train Feature (Rose Quarter)
The NWS VOYAGE Software has the powerful capability to support multiple LRT movements.
The City of Portland was formerly using a complicated external logic controller to handle the six LRT movements at this intersection. Voyage allowed the city to remove all of the programmable logic controllers that were pre-processing the LRT calls, because Voyage is designed to handle up to eight LRT movements using normal programming. Portland is now able to provide more efficiency to vehicle phases and easier maintenance for their signal technicians. Further, the change to Voyage eliminated random conflict flash situations that had plagued the location since it opened. The intersection is now easier to maintain and much more efficient.

City of Kennewick – Use of Transit Priority
The NWS VOYAGE Software offers a comprehensive Transit Priority system to enhance the movement of transit vehicles.
City of Kennewick has made use of this feature to maintain schedules for their bus fleet. When a transit vehicle is detected by the Voyage software, decisions are made based on a pre-programmed set of parameters. Opposing vehicle movements may be shortened to serve the bus sooner, or the bus movement may be lengthened (stay green) until the bus proceeds through the intersection. The beauty of Transit Priority is that encourages more bus rider ship by keeping the vehicles on schedule. Voyage Transit Priority is easy to program and works cooperatively with other important controller features like coordination and preemption.

City of Portland – LRT Queue-Delay Recovery (Interstate & Killingsworth)
The NWS VOYAGE Software has the powerful capability of relieving congestion caused by LRT systems.
Left turning traffic that crosses LRT tracks is often delayed substantially by repeated train events. City of Portland has tremendously decreased the delay to left turn movements with the use of a feature called Queue-Delay Recovery. Before the VOYAGE software was implemented there were measured delays of up to 5 ½ minutes for particular movements. With Queue-Delay Recovery, a feature that returns service to those movements that have waited the longest for service, City of Portland has been able to decrease the worst delay to about 2 1/2 min.
