ITS Projects
NWS designs, specifies, implements and deploys ITS systems. ITS Projects involve all types of field equipment including dynamic message signs (fixed and variable message), surveillance cameras, video detection devices, signal controllers, data collection stations, and others. NWS communications utilize technologies including fiber optics, narrow-band radio, spread spectrum radio, microwave, twisted |
copper wire, AC interconnect, and leased telephone lines.

Transit Projects
NWS develops controller software solutions to ensure proper operation of the combined demands of auto, pedestrian, bicycles, LRT and heavy rail. NWS has extensive experience with street car and urban light rail projects and interactions. We design new traffic signals, remodel existing signals, and allow provisions for future signals. NWS provides functional specifications of interactions between |
streetcars, the signal preemption and track switches. We also design customized hardware solutions to assist light rail signal functions.

Traffic Signal Design
NWS combines technical knowledge with ‘standards knowledge’ to prepare cost-effective traffic signal designs. We ensure the most efficient intersection possible. Completed projects include transit signal priority, interconnect plans, light rail/streetcar preemption, structural pole analysis, video detection design and red light running systems. We manage and participate in specialized |
signal projects throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Arterial / Intersection Timing
Take advantage of NWS’s decades of practical signal timing experience. We prepare signal timing plans by involving local knowledge of the intersection and understanding the traffic controller being used. Local knowledge is best obtained from the City’s engineering staff, and then reinforced by field observations under peak operating conditions. NWS uses Synchro® and SimTraffic® software to develop primary timing parameters for isolated intersections and coordinated systems. These tools produce accurate models and allow an alternative analysis.
Equipment / System Specifications
NWS supplies hardware, software and functional specifications as necessary for your traffic related applications. Contact NW Signal and we will be pleased to discuss your requirements.
